Tasting Note: The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two parcels that Thomas told me were only slightly touched by the frost, and it matured in one-third new oak. It has a crisp, well-defined and very natural bouquet that unfolds gracefully in the glass with vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannin and tightly knit red fruit. Maybe it misses a little weight toward the back end due to the difficulties in the appellation and the frost, but I admire the transparency here.


The classic Chambolle-Musigny wine is powerful, yet refined and perfumed. Along with Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, the village is considered to produce some of the finest Pinot Noir wines on earth. The perfume which characterizes the wines has earned Chambolle a reputation as the 'Volnay' of the Côte de Nuits.

As a thin-skinned grape variety, Pinot Noir generally has a moderate to high acidity, a low level of phenolic compounds, low to moderate levels of soft tannins and is generally paler in color than most other red wines.

Red wines range from a pale pinkish red through to the darker tones which an interior designer might recognize as Burgundy. Color and body do not necessarily intensify as price and/or quality rises, and even the deepest examples tend to have an appealing translucence and minimal opacity in the wine's core.
