Tasting Note: The Château Simard 2014, part of the Ausone "stable", is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, cropped at 40 hectoliters per hectare and aged in 30% new barrels. I appreciate the straightforward, no messin' about brambly red berry fruit with just a touch of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite pointed acidity with sour cherry and strawberry on the slightly austere finish. A bit rustic perhaps, but that is part of the charm.
