Nuits-Saint-Georges, which gives its name to the Côte de Nuits ("the Nuits hillside") of the northern Côte d'Or, is a sizeable town and something of a winemaking hub in the heartland of Burgundy. As wine region, or appellation, Nuits-Saint-Georges is known for relatively powerful, complex red wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety. This represents 97 percent of production, with a small amount of white wine made from Chardonnay.
The variety is often regarded as Chardonnay's understudy as it has a similar medium to full-bodied style of wine with good acidity, and responds well to oak maturation. Pinot Blanc's varietal characters include apple and almond, and sometimes a touch of smokiness, although – like Chardonnay – it is a palette for winemaker intervention, and flavors often depend on style.
Pinot Blanc is a white mutation of Pinot Noir, with a smaller concentration of anthocyanins. In the vineyard, it is relatively fruitful variety giving reliable yields each growing season. Bunches of Pinot Blanc are tightly packed clusters creating vulnerability to various mildew diseases.
