Rioja Alta is one of three sub-regions of Spain's celebrated Rioja wine region. It occupies the westernmost portion of the region, with the majority of its vineyards lying south of the Ebro River.
Generally speaking, Tempranillo produces red wines with red fruit and leather aromas, high tannins, moderate to low acidity, and moderate alcohol. In 2020, Tempranillo was the third most-planted grape variety in the world, with the majority of plantings in the Iberian peninsula.
The most searched-for Tempranillo-based wine on our list is Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva.
tasting note: "This dark violet colored wine has a bouquet of black currant, dark chocolate and juniper berry. A framework of opulent tannins plays host to flavors of blackberry, dark plums, bittersweet chocolate, rose petal and eucalyptus that evaporate into an enduring chocolate-scented finish. Drink through 2035."
