Very deep purple-black in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select comes bounding out of the glass with gregarious scents of creme de cassis, warm black cherries, plum preserves and Indian spices with hints of lilacs, garrigue, stewed tea and cigar box plus a waft of charcuterie. Full-bodied, rich, boldly fruited and wildly decadent, it has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing with loads of earthy and savory layers. -WA
Tasting note: "This is the 35th vintage of this 100% varietal powerhouse, a deeply concentrated, muscular and intensely flavored wine that offers equal parts grace and ageability. Blue fruit and notes of iron, crushed rock and cocoa powder deliver a seamless palate of opulence, with lasting hints of allspice, black pepper and oak. Enjoy from 2027–2037. Shafer began life in 1972 when John Shafer arrived in Napa with the hope of growing his own wine. He bought a plot of land in the Stags Leap hills, and terraced and replanted the steep vineyards. A Superstar in the Stags Leap District within Napa Valley, the winery has a distinct family-run appeal with wines that are crafted to emphasize quality and regional character. Shafer is one of the leading boutique wineries in America, with ratings from Wine Spectator and Robert Parker of between 88-100 points.
