You could sense the higher ripeness of the vintage in the nose of the 2011 Reserva Seleccion de la Familia, a much darker red with marked aromas of black plums, dark chocolate, roasted coffee and nuts, quite oaky and a bit heady. Even if the label looks more traditional, the profile of the wine is more modern, oakier and more extracted. The finish is dry and the tannins seem to be a little harsh. It might need more time. -WA
Bodega Luis Cabas has been a family owned winery for the last two centuries, devoting itself to viticulture and winemaking. Clearly, 1989 represent a turning point in the winery evolution, with Juan Luis Canas taking over the direction of the operations from Luis Canas his father. He undoubtedly brought fresh ideas and began to develop a new strategy encouraging aged wines producing and beginning to lay the foundations of what would later become the new winery. Nowadays, Bodega Luis Canas is recognized as one of the leading wineries as well as the most awarded winery among the prestigious Rioja region.
