Taurasi DOCG is a red wine appellation in Irpinia, a sub-region of Campania, southern Italy. It is located 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Naples, where the vineyards sit among the Apennine hills of Avellino. The wines are based on the native - and well regarded - Aglianico grape variety.
Aglianico is a red wine grape now thought to be native to southern Italy. It produces full-bodied red wines that show musky berry flavors with firm tannins and good aging potential. Campania's Taurasi and Basilicata's Aglianico del Vulture are two of the best known appellations to use the variety.
Vineyard notes: "The upper part of the Montemarano vineyard with a south-east exposure and a clayey-limestone soil with a strong presence of skeleton. The altitude is approximately 550 m above sea level, the training system is espalier with spurred cordon pruning with a planting density of 3,500 plants/ha and a yield of approximately 45 q/ha and approximately 1.3 kg/vine."
