Corton-Charlemagne is the only vineyard in Burgundy bearing the name of two emperors: Curtis d'Othon, emperor of Over-the-Rhine, giving Courthon then Corton, to which Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne, followed. Located on the emblematic “Colline des Cortons”, this Grand Cru has established the international reputation of the hill. The “Hill” or “Montagne des Cortons” is a true mosaic of styles and terroirs, made up of some 500 hectares of vines planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It brings together the villages of Ladoix-Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses, between the Côte des Pierres (south of the Côte de Nuits, where the vines mingle with the stone quarries of Comblanchien) and Savigny-lès-Beaune ( north of the Côte de Beaune). The vineyard stretches between 250 and 330 meters above sea level, forming an amphitheater without any other example in the Côte. In addition to the white Corton-Charlemagne, the Montagne de Corton also produces the red Corton. The Corton-Charlemagne wines are a beautiful green gold and reach their fullness after five to ten years of aging. On the nose, aromas of fresh nuts give way to ample and generous substance, often served by aging in barrels. This also gives them a honeyed appearance when young, even dried or exotic fruits.
