Winemaker's Notes
The old low trellis contoured Ironstone vineyard yields under 2 tonnes of fruit per acre. The concentrated fruit offered from these vines in 2016 provided us the quality and power to release our fourth Ironstone Shiraz.
After fermentation 40% of the wine was matured in new and second fill American oak for 24 months, with 60% matured in older barriques.
The bouquet displays spicy red plum, mulberry, bramble and subtle cedary oak, with hints of coconut and vanilla. The palate shows distinctive regional flavours of cranberry, Kirsch cherry, wild loganberries, black plum and toasted Mocha oak, complemented by spice and savoury notes.
This powerful Shiraz delivers balanced fruit, firm structured tannin and harmonious oak, finishing with great length of flavour.
Pirramimma was founded by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and has been owned and operated by the Johnston family ever since. It’s one of Australia’s oldest wineries to still be in family control. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate-grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed. Pirramimma has been awarded 5-Star Winery by James Halliday at Australian Wine Companion, it won Best Australian Producer (the fourth time in six years) in year 2015, 2016, 2017 and currently in 2020, with 14 Gold Medals and 12 Silver Medals.
