Sonoma County is one of the United States' most important wine regions. Vines have been grown here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.
Merlot is a red wine grape variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. It is associated equally with easy-drinking red wines and the great labels of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol.
